Heavy rains, lightning strikes to continue over Odisha

Heavy to very heavy rains were observed over Odisha during the last 24 hours. Intensity of rains were much more over coastal parts of the state. Isolated pockets have also recorded rains close to 100 mm.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Gopalpur recorded a whopping 99 mm of rains followed by Paradip at 54 mm of rainfall. Other parts of Odisha also recorded moderate to heavy rains including Balasore at 51 mm, Bhubaneswar 32 mm, Chandbali 29 mm, Cuttack 15 mm, Baripada 13 mm, Angul 10 mm, and Keonjhargarh 9 mm.

Low level convergence has been feeding moisture over Odisha and a deep trough is seen up to 200 hpa. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over East Bihar and adjoining West Bengal.

In the view of all these systems, heavy thundershowers are expected to continue over coastal areas and its adjacent districts for at least next two to three days. Coastal areas are expected to witness squally winds in the order of 50-60 kmph.

Frequent thunder and lightning strikes are also possible. Sea conditions are expected to become rough along the Odisha coast for the next 72 hours. Weather will start clearing up by May 5, until then, on and off thunder squalls along with rainfall activity will continue over Odisha.

Areas including Balasore, Chandbali, Paradip, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Gopalpur, Angul, Baripada, and Puri are likely to be affected.

During the Pre-Monsoon season, which is also the Kal Baisakhi period, lightning and thunderstorms are a common feature. In fact, many fatalities are observed in Odisha during this period. Thus, lightning strikes during this time are quite hazardous and prove to be quite fatal.
