It’s been raining heavily in Sri Lanka since the last few days. In a span of 24 hours, from 8.30 am on Thursday Galle received 20.6 mm rains, Colombo 53.1 mm, Pottuvil 92.9 mm, Batticaloa 102.4 mm and Trincomalee recorded 39.2 mm rains.
Normally, in this season the East coast of the country receives more rains than the West.
Withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon in India is followed by the beginning of Northeast Monsoon in Sri Lanka. Here, the rainfall activities intensify in December and January. As a matter of fact, it rains in Sri Lanka throughout the year. Apart from this, the Western regions experience more rains during the Southwest Monsoon season. The Eastern half, however, experiences rains in the Northeast Monsoon season.
The reason for the continuation of these rains is the shifting of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) towards South. In the last few days, the ITCZ is hanging around Sri Lanka. At present, the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is active over the country. Not just Sri Lanka but South India has been receiving good rains for the last few days.
Similar rains are likely to continue in the southeastern part of Sri Lanka like Galle, Kandy to Trincomalee for the next few days.
