Heavy rains lash West Bengal, lightning strikes kill 5 in PuruliaWeather gods continued to bring in hot weather for almost the entire country about a few days ago and the state of West Bengal was one of them which was reeling under hot weather conditions.

However, rain gods made an appearance over the state of West Bengal and the last 24 hours have been rainy enough for the state. In fact, some areas have witnessed heavy rains with lightning strikes over some parts.

During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Panagar received a whopping 74 mm of rainfall, Bahrampur 24 mm, Bankura 12.2 mm, Burdwan 24.2 mm, Coochbehar 26 mm, Jalpaiguri 21.2 mm, Kolkata 3.8 mm, and Srininketan 14 mm of rain.

A trough was extending from East Bihar up to Telangana and a cyclonic circulation was near Jharkhand. Another cyclonic circulation was near Assam. Due to the combined effect of these weather systems, many parts of West Bengal received light to moderate rains. Isolated areas also observed heavy falls along with the report of thunder squalls in parts. Not only this, lightning strikes killed 5 in Purulia.

This is the Kal Baisakhi period when violent thunderstorm activities are a common feature. This phenomenon is also known as the Nor ’westers.

The weather systems are persisting over the region. Due to this, moderate thunderstorm will continue over the region for at least the next 24 hours.
