Many areas in Coastal Tamil Nadu have received moderate to heavy rains during the last 24 hours. While Attiramapatinam received 57 mm rains, Pamban recorded 84 mm, Tondi 55 mm, Madurai 37 mm, Cuddalore 90 mm, Kodaikanal 73 mm and Thanjavur received 25 mm rains.
The reason for these heavy rains is the recently formed Cyclone Maha over the Arabian Sea. Now, as Cyclone Maha is moving northwestwards from Kerala coast, the Cyclone might gradually intensify into a Severe Cyclone by today afternoon while entering in East central Arabian Sea.
Therefore, rain activities will now start reducing over Tamil Nadu. Although, light to moderate spells with isolated heavy rains are likely to occur for another 24 hours over the state. Thereafter, a significant decrease in rain activities is likely due to the northwest movement of Cyclone Maha. Wind speed will also start subsiding after 24 hours.

The danger is likely to shift more towards Lakshadweep Islands, Kerala and Karnataka coast. The threat of Cyclone Maha will start receding over Tamil Nadu after 24 hours. Although, risk of any heavy spells of rains is now over but precaution must be taken for another 24 hours as moderate to heavy rains will keep lashing parts of Tamil Nadu. Wind speed will remain high over South Coastal Tamil Nadu. Sea conditions will also remain rough to very rough.
