Heavy rains lash parts of Tamil Nadu, light showers for Chennai

Southwest Monsoon this year has been more than kind to the state of Tamil Nadu. So much so that rains of varied intensity have been lashing the state for the past few weeks. It has only been a rare number of occasions when the entire state of Tamil Nadu has not received good showers.

The last 24 hours were also quite rainy for the entire state. So much so that one or two places also witnessed rainfall in three digits as well. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Coimbatore recorded a whopping 113 mm of rainfall, followed by Kodaikanal at 94 mm.

Other areas to have received good rains include Madurai76.5 mm, Salem 23.6 mm, Karaikal 28.2 mm, Chennai 3.8 mm, and Coonoor 3.8 mm.

These rainfall activities can be attributed to the presence of a north south trough which is running up to the Tamil Nadu region. Along with, a cyclonic circulation is over South Sri Lanka Coast and adjoining Gulf of Mannar. Due to this, moisture incursion has also increased over the region resulting in enhancement of rains.
