Heavy rains lash Northeast India, more in the offing

February 23, 2017 12:33 PM | Skymet Weather Team

From last two to three days, Northeast India has been witnessing rain and thundershowers activities. These rainy spells have eradicated the elongated dry spell that was prevailing in the region since December.

In fact, in last 24 hours, the northeastern region of the country was lashed by heavy to very heavy rains. Regions like Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Assam observed moderate to heavy rains. In fact, Cherrapunji witnessed showers in three digits.

Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Cherrapunji recorded whopping rains of 251 mm, Anni 58 mm, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia 57 mm, Lumding 33 mm, Agartala 35mm and Mazbat observed 20.8 mm of rains.

During the similar time frame, light showers were also recorded in districts like Pasighat 8.9 mm, Tezpur 9.3 mm, and Imphal 3.8 mm. Very light traces of rains were observed in Golaghat, Lengpui, and Jorhat.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these moderate to heavy showers can be associated with a wind confluence taking place over Assam and adjoining areas. Moreover, a trough is also running from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal to North Odisha.

Due to these weather systems, good rains are expected to continue over these northeastern states for another 24 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rain is likely to reduce significantly but Arunachal Pradesh is still likely to continue with scattered showers for next 48 hours.

48 hours hence, weather across Northeast India is likely to become clear and dry once again.
