Rain in Northeast IndiaUpdated on April 3, 2016 04:50 PM (IST): More rain in the offing for Northeast India

For the past few days, Northeast India has been witnessing good showers. A prolonged spell of rain over the region has also kept the temperatures under check.

These rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation which is currently over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh region.

However, during the last 48 hours, intensity of rains have reduced over Northeast India.

For instance, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Saturday, Guwahati received 4 mm of rainfall, Silchar 3 mm, Shillong 1 mm, Kailashahar 1 mm, and Agartala 1 mm.

During the next 24 hours, rains will remain confined over the south central parts of the Northeastern states. Light to moderate showers will continue over the region.

By April 5, the intensity of rain over Northeast India will increase once again. Thus, widespread rain will be observed over the region during this period.

Updated on April 1, 2016 03:40 PM (IST): Heavy rains mar Northeast India, Dhubri witness record rainfall

Northeast India is presently witnessed a prolonged spell of pre-Monsoon showers. For the fourth consecutive day, rains were witnessed over most parts of the region.

Intensity of rain varied from light to heavy showers, accompanied with strong winds and hailstorm over few places.

Isolated places have also witnessed record rainfall like Dhubri in Assam received 84 mm of rain, which is the second highest in decade.

According to Skymet Weather, cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal, which is responsible for the wet spell, is still sustaining its strength.

The intensity is more over southern parts of Northeast India that includes Lower Assam, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. However, isolated rains cannot be ruled out over rest of the region.

The system will continue to bring more downpour and thundershowers during the next 24 hours, reducing thereafter.

After brief respite of just a day, rains will again pick up pace by April 4 and are likely to lash the region till April 7.

Following are the rainfall figures recorded in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday.

Updated on March 31, 2016 11:30 AM (IST): Good rains continue to lash Northeast India

Good rains continued to lash Northeast India including Sikkim for the third consecutive day. According to Skymet Weather, fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers were recorded over several parts of the region.

Few pockets have also witnessed thunder squall along with hailstorm.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, northeastern states are witnessing prolonged spell of rain that is likely to continue for another week.

Particularly during the next 48 hours, the region is likely to see increase in intensity with few heavy spells. We can expect slight relief on April 3 and April 4. However, rains will pick up pace again thereafter.

Back to back passage of Western Disturbances is responsible for the ongoing spell. This system is further influenced by a cyclonic circulation marked over Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal.

Both the systems are likely to stay, giving fairly widespread rain and thundershowers during the 24-48 hours.

Following are the rainfall figures recorded in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday.

Updated on March 30, 2016 12:30 PM (IST): Prolonged spell of good rains in offing for Northeast India

Northeast India has been receiving good spell of rain and thundershowers for the last few days.

However as reiterated by Skymet Weather, intensity of rain and spread has decreased significantly since last 24 hours. But few places still recorded light to moderate showers.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Golaghat recorded 14.2 mm of rain, Jorhat 10.5 mm, North Lakhimpur 14.6 mm, Agartala 11.2 mm, Pasighat 7.6 mm, Cherrapunji 5 mm and Kohima 1.6 mm.

As we progress further, rain intensity will continue to be on lower side for another 24 hours. Thereafter rains are expected to pick up pace once again from the night of March 31.

This activity will be on account of a trough that is likely to develop from Assam up to North Bay of Bengal. The trough will give fairly widespread rain and thundershowers over northeastern states till April 1.

Subsequently, rain will decrease over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh but NMMT (Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura) region will continue to get showers for next 2-3 days.

Moreover by April 5, a western disturbance is expected to move along the foothills of the region. Therefore, intensity of rain will increase again over entire region.

Updated on March 29, 2015 01:47 PM (IST): Heavy rains lash Northeast India, more in offing

Northeast India have witnessed good rain and thundershowers during last 24 hours.

According to Skymet Weather, fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers along with isolated heavy spells lashed entire northeastern states including Sikkim.

The rain activity can be attributed to the eastward movement of Western Disturbance.

This system has also pushed the trough extending from Sub-Himalayan West Bengal up to North Bay of Bengal across Gangetic West Bengal further east.

Both the system will continue to give rain over the region for next 24 to 48 hours but with reduced intensity.

However, light rain will continue over isolated places as another system is approaching Northeast India.
