Kolkata has been receiving on and off rains for the past few days. So much so that rains in Kolkata have been playing spoilsport at the Durga Puja celebrations. While these rains were light in nature during the last few days, rain intensity picked up pace during the last 24 hours.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the Alipore observatory received a whopping 51 mm of rain. The Dum Dum observatory witnessed 34 mm rainfall. These figures indicate that rains have not only been heavy over the region, but these showers have also been widespread.

These showers can be attributed to the upper air cyclonic circulation which is over Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal as well as Odisha. Also, a trough was extending from this system northward up to Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

The city of joy celebrates Durga Puja with fervor and joy, however, these showers have caused major disruptions to the festivities. Now, during the next 24 hours, Kolkata is expected to receive some more rains.

Thereafter, rain intensity is expected to reduce and the weather conditions are expected to clear up. Temperatures will also witness a slight rise.
