Heavy rains lash hills of North India, flood alert in Kashmir

Rain in ManaliAs reiterated by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, heavy to extremely heavy rains have lashed several areas of Jammu and Kashmir during last 24 hours.

Flood alert has been issued in Kashmir valley on Wednesday, as Jhelum River level crossed the danger mark. Reportedly, river has been flowing above the flood declaration level of 21 feet at Sangam in South Kashmir due to incessant rainfall.

In view of this, local authorities and NDRF team are on alert to tackle any untoward incident.

Higher reaches of the state have also reported first snowfall of the season. 300 km-long Jammu-Srinagar highway was also closed on Tuesday afternoon in wake of the landslides due to torrential downpour.

According to Skymet, it is the combination of the Western Disturbance and the low pressure area, over Punjab and adjoining hills of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, which has caused extreme weather conditions over the region.

As per the latest forecast, intensity of rain is expected to reduce over Jammu and Kashmir during next 24 hour. However, flood situation may not relent.

In 2014, similar weather activity had triggered massive floods in the state claiming hundreds of lives and leading to colossal damage. Let us have a look at the rainfall recorded across Jammu and Kashmir in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday.

Weather in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand

Both the neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have also recorded light to moderate showers on Tuesday, with few places receiving heavy rains.

Skymet predicts, similar weather activity is expected to continue for another 24 to 48 hours as both the weather systems will continue to prevail over the region. Following are rainfall figured observed in these two states during last 24 hours.
