Srinagar rains during the month of April are usually far and few. While January and February are the good rainfall months, rain and snow activity usually takes a backseat during the months of March as well as April. In fact, April sees the least amount of weather activity as the frequency of Western Disturbances reduces to quite an extent.
However, this year has a different story to tell altogether. The month of March had a few good spells of rain. Not only this, a Western Disturbance is currently over the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This weather system has been giving moderate to heavy rains over many parts of the state. Adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also recorded good rains.
Snow show was observed over Srinagar, Manali, Baramulla and other areas of the hills of North India. The city that stood out was Srinagar. The city recorded a hefty sum of rainfall during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday.
In a span of 24 hours, Srinagar recorded a whopping 83 mm of rain which is the highest ever during the month of April. The last time heavy rains were recorded was on April 15, 1997 when 62.2 mm of rainfall was witnessed.
Other parts of the Jammu and Kashmir region also witnessed good rains with Banihal witnessing 90 mm. This rainfall figure is the highest in the last decade with the all-time record being 116.4 mm recorded on April 5 1994.
Areas including Gulmarg 35 mm, Jammu 27 mm, and Qazi Gund 56 mm recorded moderate to heavy showers as well.
As per weathermen at Skymet, these rainfall activities are likely to continue for at least the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the system will start moving away resulting in the reduction of rainfall.
