Coastal Karnataka has been witnessing heavy to very heavy rains for the last few days. These rains can be attributed to an off-shore Trough running from South Konkan and Goa up to Kerala in association with an active Monsoon surge over the West coast.
On July 21, Coastal Karnataka recorded 51.2 mm of rains against the normal of 35.3 mm. To date, rainfall in Coastal Karnataka is falling under the normal category with the value of minus 18% (+/- 19 considered normal).
In the past 24 hours, Mangaluru recorded 155 mm of rains, Honavar has recorded 139 mm of rains while Karwar has seen 69 mm of rains. According to meteorologists, Coastal Karnataka will now receive moderate to heavy showers with one or two very heavy spells during the next 48 hours. The intensity of rains will start decreasing from July 25 onward but light to moderate rains will continue.
South Interior Karnataka may also receive few moderate spells during the next 24 hours. Thereafter the intensity of rains will increase over North Interior Karnataka, which will record light to moderate rains with one or two isolated heavy spells. These intermittent rains are expected to continue over North Interior Karnataka until July 28.
Post 24 hours, rains will decrease over South Interior Karnataka. Light scattered rains with one or two moderate spells will still be observed at some places.
Places like Mangaluru, Karwar, Honavar, Gadag, and Chitradurga will see good rains during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Thus, we can say that Monsoon will remain vigorous over Coastal Karnataka for at least next two days and rains will revive in parts of Karnataka and is likely to stay for a week or so.
