Heavy Rains In Maharashtra: Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra Head For Deluge

July 5, 2023 3:56 PM |

Heavy to very heavy rains are likely over western parts of Maharashtra over the next 3 days. Moderate rain and thundershowers are expected over the eastern half also during this period. Multiple weather systems, working in tandem,  will cast this much-needed wet spell. Weather activity will slow down and reduce substantially on the weekend.

Southwest monsoon has not been fair so far in the core monsoon rainfed zone of Maharashtra. The month of June witnessed a large deficit across all three landlocked sub-divisions of Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada and Vidarbha.  Rain shortfall varied from 50% to 70% and was marginally better for Konkan at 28%. Courtesy few decent showers at the start of July, deficit margins have improved over Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra. However, the accrued shortfall has not changed much for Marathwada and Vidarbha.

A cyclonic circulation is marked over the northern parts of Vidarbha and Marathwada in the lower levels of the atmosphere. Also, the offshore trough is well-marked all along the west coast. Sufficient moisture is being dragged from the Arabian Sea and partially from the Bay of Bengal. The circulation will gradually get closer to the north Madhya Maharashtra and Konkan regions. The offshore trough and circulation, together will accentuate the rainfall activity, more so for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra.

Konkan region, including Mumbai, Alibag, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg and the Ghat side of  Madhya Maharashtra covering  Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Sholapur will be battered with heavy to very heavy rains on 05th and 06th July. Twin cities of Pune and Nashik, along with Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Dhule and  Nundurbar will be soaked by intense rainfall activity between 05th and 07th July.

Parts of Vidarbha neighbouring Madhya Pradesh and Marathwada contiguous to Madhya Maharashtra will also have moderate rain and thundershowers at many places and heavy rainfall at isolated places on the 06th and 07th of July. The accumulated shortfall for the state will recover significantly for Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra and consolatory for the other two sub-divisions of Marathwada and Vidarbha.
