Heavy rains forecast as Monsoon covers parts of Punjab and Haryana

July 5, 2019 7:05 PM |

rain in punjab and haryana

The last 24 hours turned quite eventful for Punjab and Haryana as the two states finally saw Monsoon making an onset after a rather long dry spell. Usually Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are the last to witness Monsoon onset in the Indian mainland, where it otherwise takes place usually in the first week of July. Also, unlike the prolonged dry spell in many other states the Monsoon has already made its entry over the region. No substantial delay was observed over the region as compared to that of central and eastern parts of the country.

Places adjacent to Delhi like that of Rohtak and extreme northern parts of Punjab like that of Pathankot and Amritsar saw heavy rainfall activity in the last 24 hours.

The reason for this quick Monsoon succession can be attribute to a few weather systems that were governing the weather over Punjab and Haryana-

  1. A Low-Pressure Area over Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh region is gradually shifting northwards while leading to the simultaneous gradual shift of Trough line with itself.
  2. A Cyclonic Circulation over Central parts of Pakistan and adjoining Rajasthan.

Now, Monsoon will cover even more parts of Punjab and Haryana in the next three to four days except for some areas bordering Rajasthan like that of Faridkot, Mukhtsar, Sirsa and Fatehabad.

The intensity of these rains will remain moderate in the next three days. A few areas surrounding Delhi and regions along the foothills like that of Rohtak, Karnal, Ambala, Pathankot and Amritsar might receive heavy spells. Also, the continuous rains will cause a drop in temperatures, while a continuous increase in humidity will take place.

Punjab and Haryana were otherwise were running rain deficient in the month of June. Rain deficiency was recorded more than 50% over both the states and hasn’t got covered even in the first few days of July. However, with the rains making an appearance now, the rain deficiency might get arrested now.
