Active to Vigorous Monsoon conditions are prevailing over Northeast India since the last many days. Particularly the states of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have been receiving heavy to very heavy rains.

Three-digit rainfall figures are quite common in Northeast India. During the last 24 hours, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya recorded 370 mm of rains and just a day before it recorded 259 mm rains. In fact, Cherrapunji is the second rainiest place in the world followed by Mawsynram (also in Meghalaya).

Now, we expect heavy to very heavy rains to continue over Northeast India until July 13 or 14. Rain activities will remain vigorous over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. Moderate to heavy rains are expected over the rest of Northeast India.

At present, a Trough is extending from Northwest India to Nagaland across Assam and Meghalaya. Moreover, strong winds from Bay of Bengal are dumping moisture over Northeast parts of the country. These heavy rains have already triggered flooding over many districts of Assam. Now, we expect some more parts of Northeast India including Assam to face the fury of floods. In fact, floods in Assam are a common feature in Monsoon. The continuous torrential rains for the next two to three days will further worsen the situation. Parts of Meghalaya might also experience localized flooding.
