Ambikapur city of Chhattisgarh has been recording torrential rains for the past few days and last 24 hours were no different. In span of 21 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, the city recorded 65 mm of rain.
With this, Ambikapur has recorded about 400 mm of rain in span of one week only. The city has so far recorded 521 mm of rain, surpassing its monthly average of 389.9 mm. It is also the highest rainfall recorded in August in last 10 years.
The city has already broken the record of highest rainfall received in duration of 24 hours in the last decade.
These recorded breaking rains can be attributed to the deep depression which is prevailing over Northeast Madhya Pradesh and North Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas of Southeast Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. As per weathermen, the system is likely to give more rains over the region during the next 24-48 hours.
According to Skymet Weather, Chhattisgarh will continue to record more rains in the coming days. As the present weather system passes away, it will be followed by another system brewing in North Bay of Bengal. The system is also likely to move in west direction again and affect the weather over Chhattisgarh including Ambikapur.
Chhattisgarh has been rain deficit in the last few days but with these ongoing rains, the state has manged to cover up the deficit. The cumulative rainfall for Chhattisgarh stands at par as on August 18. Further, we expect that rains will so go in surplus.
