Under the influence of low pressure area, states of Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim have rained heavily for the last 3 days. Northeast Bihar, Sub Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim have been deluged incessantly over the past 48 hours. Amid torrential downpour, mountainous state of Sikkim witnessed tragic incident of lake outburst in the northern parts resulting catastrophic loss of life and infrastructure. Inclement weather conditions aided by treacherous terrain restricted the rescue and relief operations . Weather conditions are expected to improve to undertake speedy operations over and around the calamity struck regions. But remember, the water bodies and the mountain slopes remain susceptible and quandary for relief operations, even after improvement of weather.
Low pressure area is now lying over western parts of Gangetic West Bengal and North Bangladesh. Weather system will move slowly to the northeast over parts of lower Assam and Meghalaya. These parts will have very heavy rainfall at some places over the next 2 days, that is 05th & 06thOctober, more intense on 05thOct. Locations like Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Golpara, Barpeta, Kamrup, Nalbari and Guwahati in Assam will be at risk of having strong weather activity. Also, Garo & Khasi hills, Shillong, Barapani, Nongpoh, and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya will be susceptible to extreme weather during this period.
As the weather system weakens and moves northeastward, conditions will improve significantly from 07thOctober onward. Still, the moisture trapped in the valley will continue to trigger moderate rainfall at many places over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland between 07th and 10thOctober. Southwest monsoon rains are the last to retreat from Northeast India. ‘Off and On’ stray showers will continue over the region till middle of the month. Invariably, the monsoon withdrawal stretches to about 15thOctober.
