The low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal (BoB) has weakened a little. However, the cyclonic circulation of the system persists in the lower levels. Also, there is a north-south trough, albeit a weak one, along the coastal parts of North Tamil Nadu and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Under the influence of these two systems, coastal parts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh will witness moderate to heavy rainfall over the next two days. The capital cities Chennai and Puducherry are likely to have a few spells of heavy rainfall during this period.
Heavy rainfall remained confined to South Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the past 24 hours. Kavali and Ongole recorded 67mm and 63mm of rainfall respectively. Minambakkam, Nungambakkam, Puducherry and Cuddalore registered light to moderate rainfall, between 15mm and 25mm. South coastal Tamil Nadu and interiors of the state measured light rainfall. With a broad cyclonic circulation and an easterly wave moving across the Sri Lanka region, the northeasterly stream is likely to strengthen along the Tamil Nadu and Andhra coasts.
Active northeast monsoon conditions are likely over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka, over the next 48 hours. Light weather activity will continue, even thereafter. Few heavy spells are likely over Bapatla, Kavali, Ongole, Nellore, Sriharikota, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tambaram, Puducherry, Cuddalore and Karaikal in the next 48 hours. Broad clearance is expected over the region after the 18th of 2024.
