Heavy Rainfall Likely Over Mumbai, May Cross Monthly Normal This Week

September 24, 2024 1:40 PM |

Mumbai, the rainiest city during monsoon was generally quiet during the last one week. The month of September did not witness any major activity and typical Mumbai rains were missing. For a change, the city observed a few heavy showers in some parts, yesterday. The airport observatory Santacruz, recorded 75mm of rainfall, whereas, Colaba measured a mere 16mm, in the past 24 hours. More showers are likely, possibly more intense and large spread, over the next few days.

Including the past 24-hour spell, Santacruz has accumulated 265mm of rainfall in this month, so far. It is still short of the monthly normal of 341.4mm. The city is favourably placed to receive more showers, mostly intermittent with moderate intensity and only a few being sharp and heavy today. The pace will build up further, to catch up with the monthly normal during this week.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, anytime soon. It may not be a strong system to start with but the spread of activity will be large and intense in pockets. Ahead of this system, there is a cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and under its influence, a low-pressure area will form. Also, there is an east-west oriented shear line, almost along 20°N, from the eastern coast to the Konkan region. Courtesy of this shear zone, monsoon has been active over most parts of Maharashtra and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. Konkan coast from Dahanu to Ratnagiri received moderate showers during the past 24 hours.

The low pressure is likely to move inland and travel across the central parts of the country. Monsoon surge is expected to build up, along Konkan and Goa. Mumbai is likely to receive moderate rainfall today, becoming heavier tomorrow and a shade lower the next day, on the 26th of September. The monsoon showers will become further light, on the remaining days of this month.
