The Northeast Monsoon has arrived with a bang this season. Though, formally its arrival was announced on the 15th of October, whereas the favourable conditions prevailed much before. But, since the southwest monsoon was continuing, the two cannot remain together over the country. This possibly delayed the actual date of arrival over Southeast Peninsular India.
Bengaluru has been experiencing light rains, for the last one week. Moderate showers were witnessed on the 14th of October and became heavier on the 15th of October. The city observatory recorded 66.1mm rainfall and the HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) measured 89mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. Some pockets of the city had a bigger deluge, turning roads and lanes into streams of water. The situation has improved now but more showers are likely for the next 6-7 days.
A depression is marked over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. Another weather system as cyclonic circulation is seen over Coastal Karnataka, Goa and the adjoining Arabian Sea. The east-west trough, joining the two is passing through and through South Interior Karnataka, in the proximity of the capital city Bengaluru. Both these systems will move westward, keeping the monsoon active over the South Peninsula in general and for the city of Bengaluru, in particular.
Earlier, the city had witnessed very poor rains in the, otherwise rainiest month of September. October is likely to catch up and may compensate for the shortfall, at least partially. Including yesterday’s spell, the city observatory has amassed 148.6mm of rainfall between the 01st and 16th of October. It is likely to overtake the monthly normal of 168.3mm, very soon. Scattered rain and thundershowers, mostly intermittent and moderate in nature will lash the city and suburbs for the next 6-7 days. During this period, a few spells of heavy rainfall can not be ruled out in some areas of the city. The probability of these heavy showers is higher between the 18th and 21st of October. Both, the intensity and spread could impact the transport system in some pockets during this period. The weather conditions will improve from the 23rd of October onwards.
