Heavy Rain to Hammer Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, Bringing Relief and Wiping Out Deficits

June 29, 2024 7:34 PM |

The monsoon season has arrived in North West India, bringing much-needed rain to the region. While Punjab and Haryana received the first wave of showers, Delhi wasn't far behind. On June 28th, the capital city witnessed a significant downpour of 228 mm, marking the official onset of the monsoon and pushing Delhi into a surplus of 68% rainfall compared to normal. This stands in stark contrast to Punjab and Haryana, which currently face deficiencies of 46% and 53% respectively.

However, the good news doesn't stop there. Multiple weather systems are converging over North West India, promising a period of heavy rainfall from June 30th onwards. A trio of cyclonic circulations – one over northeast Rajasthan, another over northwest Rajasthan, and the third over central Haryana – will interact, intensifying rain activity across Delhi, south Punjab, and Haryana. This period of heavy rain is expected to continue until July 2nd.

While there may be a slight dip in rainfall on July 3rd, the reprieve will be short-lived. From July 4th onwards, moderate showers are forecast for several parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and adjoining areas of North West India. This pattern is likely to persist for a week, effectively wiping out the rainfall deficiencies in Punjab and Haryana within the first 10 days of July.

This extended period of rain holds significant benefits for the region. Farmers will see their parched lands replenished, while the much-needed decrease in temperatures will bring welcome relief from the ongoing hot and humid conditions. The rain will also help replenish water reserves and mitigate potential drought concerns.

Overall, the upcoming monsoon spell promises to be a boon for North West India. While heavy rainfall can sometimes lead to localized flooding and disruption, the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term challenges. With the monsoon rains arriving in full force, the region can look forward to a period of agricultural prosperity and a reprieve from the scorching summer heat.
