Rain and snow have once again commenced over the hills of North India i.e. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Gulmarg recorded 15 mm of rain, followed by Kupwara 14 mm, Batote 8 mm, Pahalgam 6 mm, Tehri 3 mm and Mussoorie 2 mm.

In the wake of successive weather systems from the beginning of February, the northern hills have been observing significant rain and snowfall activities. As on February 18, with such record-breaking continuous rains throughout the month, all the three hilly states are largely rain surplus. Jammu and Kashmir is surplus by 80%, followed by Himachal Pradesh 39% and Uttarakhand 76%.

Now again right after a short break, we expect heavy rain and snow to lash the Western Himalayas. In fact, by today night the intensity and spread of weather activities is likely to increase over the hills of North India.

This time the rainy spell over the northern hills is expected to be a prolonged one, as two successive Western Disturbances along with their induced cyclonic circulations over the northern plains are likely to affect the region.

Thus, we can say that the Western Himalayas are all set to witness an extended spell of heavy rain and snow starting February 18 onwards. As these weather activities will gradually intensify, we expect weather activities of rain and snow to peak on February 20 and 21.

In fact, during this time due to significant weather activities, road and air traffic is likely to get affected. We also expect landslide and mudslide to occur over many parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The possibility for the occurrence of Avalanche are also very high. Therefore, disruptions cannot be ruled out and precautions must be taken.
