Heavy rain lashes Northeast India

Northeast India has been receiving very decent pre monsoon activities since many days. Between March 1 and April 13, Meghalaya has recorded large excess rain with 94% surplus, followed by Assam which is surplus by 45%, Arunachal Pradesh is in normal range with 2% deficiency. Nagaland and Manipur are also in a normal range category. Mizoram and Tripura are only States which are large rain deficient.

Cherrapunji is the second rainiest place in the world and has kept up its reputation with 170 mm rain during last 24 hours. In fact, intensity of rain has intensified over Cherrapunji since March 25th. Since then, it has received three-digit rainfall on seven occasions which include 357 mm on April 2nd and 434 mm on April 5th. During last 24 hours, moderate to heavy rains had occurred over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as well.

Strong winds from Bay of Bengal after feeding moisture over northwest India. A cyclonic circulation is also persisting over Eastern parts of the country which is also adding the enhancement of rainfall. We expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over many parts of Northeast India and till April 17. Thereafter, rain intensity will decrease but on and off light to moderate rain will continue for another few days.

Pre monsoon season is turning out to be good for Northeast India.
