Heavy rain lashes Chennai, more showers expected for next 48 hours

Chennai rainSouthwest Monsoon is not the rainiest season for the entire state of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the average rainfall for Chennai during the month of July is just 100 mm. Rainfall amounts begin to rise from the month of August, with the city recording 140 mm of rain on an average.

By October the Northeast Monsoon - main season for rain - sets in and begins to give very good amounts of rain to the city. November is the rainiest month for Chennai with 400 mm of average rainfall.

Meanwhile, July has proved to be good for the city in terms of rainfall. According to the data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Chennai has recorded 130 mm of rain against the normal monthly average of 100 mm.

And August has started on a good note too. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Meenambakkam airport has received 56 mm of rain. Looking at the weather models at Skymet, there are chances of more rain in Chennai for next 48 hours.

With this spell of rain the temperatures in the city have also dropped by 1-2 degrees. And with cloudy conditions expected to prevail for a couple of days more, the temperatures will maintain levels.

During the month of August the city observes 9 rainy days but frequent heavy spells are not a common feature.
