During the Monsoon months, the monsoon current usually remains weak over the hills of North India i.e. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In fact, it remains weakest over Jammu and Kashmir followed by Himachal, thus Uttarakhand sees the most amount of rains.

During the last 24 hours, good rains occurred along the foothills. Such as Mussoorie recorded very heavy rain to the tune of 163 mm and Shimla also recorded heavy rains to the tune of 60.2 mm.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Jammu recorded heavy rain to the tune of 94.8 mm, followed by Dharamshala 17.4 mm, Sundernagar 15.6 mm, Joshimath 9.6 mm, Nainital 9 mm, Champawat 7 mm, Solan and Katra 6.2 mm, Kullu 1 mm, Kalpa 0.4 mm.

Presently as no significant weather system is seen over the hills, we do not expect any major weather activity over the region. But as we can see that easterly winds are blowing over the Indo-Gangetic Plains, heavy rains may occur along the foothills, especially Uttarakhand region.

However, rains are widespread over the western Himalayas due to the presence of any significant weather system over the areas. Meanwhile, rains occur only along the foothills when easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal blow over the Indo Gangetic Plains.

Thus, we can say that both these factors are responsible for the occurrence of rains over the hills of North India.
