Heavy to very heavy rain has been observed in several areas of Madhya Pradesh in last 24 hours. The state had been witnessing a prolonged dry spell for last few days and July had remained mainly dry with only traces of rain. However, the spell of heavy rain has finally made an entrance into the state and lashed several places with moderate Monsoon rains.
Major cities to have received three digit rainfall during 24 hours are Betul 102 mm, Pachmarhi 206 mm, Seoni 124 mm and Chhindwara 102 mm.
Other cities that also received moderate rain in past 24 hours include Jabalpur with 95 mm, Khajuraho 29 mm, Bhopal 32 mm, Sagar 45.6 mm and Umaria with 62.8 mm.
Heavy rain is attributed to the well-marked low pressure area which is lying over Southeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Vidarbha region.

The well-marked low pressure over Jharkhand and North Odisha is set to bring heavy rains over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh for next 24-48 hours that will bring down rainfall deficiency in these parts substantially, according to Skymet Meteorology Division in India. Vidarbha is also expected to receive light to moderate rain due to this weather system.
Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in East Madhya Pradesh and some districts namely Mandla, Seoni and Jabalpur may witnesses flood like situation during the next 48 hours. Situation is likely to be similar in Chhattisgarh where Durg, Raipur, Rajnandgaon and Bilaspur will remain under a flood threat for next couple of days.
Part of Central India- East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh and parts of Vidarbha- had observed above normal rainfall at the end of June. Though due to subdued rainfall activity in July, rainfall excess took no time in turning into deficiency by end of July. For instance, rainfall in Vidarbha was in excess by 52% than normal on 30th June and it was deficient by 22% than normal on August 2. Similarly, rainfall in Chhattisgarh was in excess by 41% than normal on 30th June and it was deficient by 12% than normal on August 2.
However, as per Skymet’s forecast, this rainfall deficiency is most likely to come down by 8%-10% in next few days as heavy to very Monsoon rains lash these parts owing to the well-marked low pressure area. The weather system is gradually moving towards west, southwest direction and will give light to moderate rain over southern parts of West MP and Marathwada after 24-36 hours.
