The eastern states of the country comprising of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal is all set to witness a prolonged spell for four days from February 25 onward. This spell would be accompanied by lightning strikes and hailstorm especially over Odisha followed by Bengal and then Jharkhand.

As per Skymet Weather, simultaneous occurrence over western and eastern part of the country is not a very regular phenomenon. The activities in west and east are generally seen on odd-even intervals. However, in the coming days we would witness simultaneous activities, both in west and east.

Terrain and moisture, both play a very significant role in the weather activities and the eastern parts of the country are very peculiar to such activities. There is no dearth of moisture in Odisha and Bay of Bengal because these two are close to the proximity of the sea. For any weather activity to take place, a trigger is a must accompanied by local weather conditions. At times, there can be sensitive and high impact weather activities as well. Also, differential heating over coastal and inland areas also act as a catalyst trigger.

A fresh Western Disturbance would start affecting the hills from February 24 and its induced cyclonic circulation will be affecting from February 25. On the other hand, a confluence zone due to different stream of winds, one from Indo-Gangetic Plains and the other moisture feeding south-easterlies from Bay of Bengal would interact, resulting in weather activity. On February 25, both the systems over west and east would strengthen up. Later on, it would merge to establish a trough extending from Rajasthan to West Bengal across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha.

February 26 would be the day when widespread rains would be seen both over the Indo-Gangetic plains, eastern and the north-eastern states of the country. Strong gusty winds with possibility of lightning strikes cannot be ruled out. Scores of people lose their lives because of lightning strikes in Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. As we proceed, we can expect lightning activities to intensify during the pre-monsoon season. With this, we extend a caution for these areas on February 25 and 26.

Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Kolkata, Midnapore, Bankura, 24 Parganas, Bokara, Ranchi and Jamshedpur are the places which would witness intense weather activities in the coming days. As of now, Bihar is rain surplus by 10%, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal are rain deficit by 55%, 66% and 90%, respectively.
