Kochi in the last two days has been receiving moderate amounts of rain. According to the rainfall data available with Skymet, Kochi in a span of 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday has recorded a good spell of 29 mm.
Currently, the Offshore Trough over Karnataka and Kerala is active due to which we can expect an intense spell of rain in Kochi today. In fact, this weather system is likely to give moderate to heavy rain in the entire state of Kerala.
For the next two days, there is a forecast of intermittent rain in Kerala with reduced intensity. However, isolated heavy rain in the state and Kochi can not be ruled out during this period. Thereafter (24 onward) the intensity and spread of rain in Kochi will reduce considerably.
Kochi in the month of August has received heavy to very heavy downpour particularly between August 5 and 13. During this period flooding was reported from several parts of the city.
Going by the rainfall data available with Skymet, Kochi has recorded a whopping 917 mm of rain so far in the month of August against the monthly normal of 378.8 mm, which is almost three times the normal figure. And with a few more days left for the month to end the rainfall surplus in Kochi may rise further.
And talking about Kerala as a whole, the rainfall amount from June 1 to August 21 is normal by -1% ( +/- 19% of rain is considered normal in meteorological term).
