Heavy rain in Chennai and Tamil Nadu for the next two days, courtesy well marked low

During the last 24 hours, Tamil Nadu has received moderate to heavy rains at many places. Particularly, the coastal areas of the state have received good rains. According to the records, Nugambakkam observatory in Chennai managed to receive 22 mm rains, Puducherry 16 mm, Cuddalore 43 mm, Karaikal 29 mm, Nagapattinam 9 mm, Tiruchirrapali 14 mm, while Atirrampattinam recorded 10 mm rain. Not just the last 24 hours, it’s been raining in Tamil Nadu for the last few days now.

The reason behind these rains is the presence of a Well Marked Low Pressure Area is over Comorin areas and adjoining areas in the Indian ocean. An associated Cyclonic Circulation is extending up to mid-tropospheric levels. This Well Marked Low Pressure Area might soon convert into a Deep Depression in the Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area, probably in the next 24 hours.

So, we expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over many parts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai during the next 24 to 48 hours. Thereafter, the intensity will start decreasing as the weather system will start moving westwards and concentrate further. Thus, the next two days are likely to bring good rains over Tamil Nadu.

As per the cumulative records for the season, Tamil Nadu hasn’t received rains at par. It’s still running 3% rain deficient as of October 29. Whereas all the other states in South India have received either ‘excess’ or ‘largely excess’ rains in Northeast Monsoon.

These rains are certainly going to improve the rain figures over the state as one after the other systems are forming over Arabian Sea.
