Monsoon season this year remained largely deficient over the northeastern states of India. Very less rains were observed in this region, barring a few occasions where good rainfall activity was observed in pockets of Northeast India.
As of today, all the states of Northeast India are rain deficient except Mizoram, that is rain surplus by 6%. Meghalaya and Manipur are largely rain deficient by 43% and 67%, respectively. In fact, Arunachal Pradesh is rain deficient by 38%, Nagaland 29%, Assam 27% and Tripura 17%.
During the last 24 hours, fairly widespread rain with scattered heavy showers was witnessed over Assam. Meanwhile, rest of Northeast India observed scattered light rainfall activity with isolated moderate spells.
In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Guwahati recorded 95 mm of rain, followed by Tezpur 67 mm, North Lakhimpur 61 mm, Mazbat and Lengpui 60 mm.
These heavy rains have been attributed to the low-pressure area which was seen over Northwest Bay of Bengal and the moist southerly winds blowing over the region.
However, at present the low-pressure area is seen moving inland. Therefore, we expect heavy rains over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, meanwhile moderate rainfall activity will be observed in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Moreover, as this weather system is expected to persist over the region for the next two days, we expect fairly widespread rains to continue over the northeastern states of India.
