People in the metropolitan cities of Mumbai and Delhi would need to brace up for some good rain on Saturday. Weather models indicate chances of heavy rain in both the metropolitan cities. “The rain pattern is showing an increase of rainfall in Mumbai for the next 48hours since a strong monsoon surge is affecting the Maharashtra coast. Tomorrow we are expecting heavy rain of up to 70mm and up to 40mm day after”, says Mahesh Palawat, Head of the meteorological team at Skymet Weather.

On the other hand good amount of rain is expected in the capital too. “It is currently raining heavily in northwest parts of Uttar Pradesh as the low pressure system and the axis of monsoon trough have merged together. The effects of this system will bring 30mm plus rain in Delhi tomorrow. Rain may decrease considerably on Sunday and only record up to 10mm”, adds Palawat.

As rain lash these cities, temperatures are expected to drop considerably making the weather cool. After days of very high humidity and extremely muggy weather Delhiites will finally heave a sigh of relief. Humidity levels may drop down to 80% and the maximum temperature will fall by 4 degrees and not exceed beyond 30⁰C. Night temperature may drop by 2 degrees and settle at 25⁰C. Easterlies too may pick up pace and blow at a speed of up to 30kmph.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Mumbai may drop too. The mercury is expected to slip by one to two degrees. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be 28 and 23⁰C. Westerlies from the sea will be very strong at 40kmph. Normal life may be disrupted due to traffic jams and train delays.

“Heavy rain in Mumbai is not likely to last for long. Following the usual pattern, the monsoon surge at the west coast of India may become weak and would give heavy rain only for 48 to 72hours. And in Delhi too, rain will continue till the 25th of July but will be heavy only on Saturday. Monday may see below 10mm of rain in the capital city”, informs Mahesh Palawat.
