Heavy rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir for the past two days crippled life as the 300 km long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was closed for traffic on Monday. Air traffic was also hit badly as no flights could land at the Srinagar Airport. Persistent snow led to closure of schools and educational institutes as well.
The summer capital of Srinagar has recorded 54.8 mm of precipitation in the last 24 hours. Several other places in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh also observed rain and snow. Rain has brought down the maximums considerably and they are 8 to 10 degrees below normal. Here’s a list of places which received rain and snow in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday.

In Himachal Pradesh, Shimla and Chamba received 35.5 mm and 37 mm of precipitation. Other places like Kulu received 16.1 mm, Manali 7 mm, Kalpa 7.4 mm Sundernagar 10.8 mm and Keylong 4 mm of rain and snow.
According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Western Disturbance currently lies over Jammu and Kashmir and is moving eastwards. Snowfall has reduced considerably but remnants of the system will bring sporadic showers for the next 48 hours. The weather will remain dry till another Western Disturbance brings rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Commencing on the 15th, intensity of rain will be light for 2 days and pick up by 17th of March. Rain is likely over the northwestern plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh.
