Updated on May 11, 2016 5:00 PM (IST): Pre-Monsoon activity gaining strength in Kerala
Pre-Monsoon activities have started picking up in Kerala. The state received widespread good rain and thundershowers during last 24 hours. Rainfall has been more intensive in southern parts than northern Kerala. Temperatures which were settling way above the normal levels have come down marginally. Gradually, weather conditions will become pleasant in the state.
Here's a look at the rainfall figures recorded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Kerala are as follows:
The rainfall figures recorded by Skymet's automated weather stations in Kerala are as follows:
The wind discontinuity continues to run from Marathwada up to Tamil Nadu. In view of this weather system, Kerala will continue to receive good pre-Monsoon showers during next 24 hours. In fact, rainfall will keep increasing in the state. All thanks to the Monsoon system brewing in the Bay of Bengal.
Updated on May 10, 2016 2:00 PM (IST): Increasing pre-Monsoon rain in Kerala before onset of Monsoon 2016
Kerala witnessed deficit rains throughout the month of April. Rainfall deficiency kept rising with every passing week. As of May 4, the cumulative rainfall deficiency for the pre-Monsoon season stands at 62% in Kerala. The state has received 60.4 mm of rainfall against the normal of 160.9 mm from March 1 to May 4. However, now onwards we expect pre-Monsoon showers to gain strength in the state.
Record-breaking temperatures in Kerala had resulted in heatwave across the state. Due to lack of pre-Monsoon most parts of Kerala including the coastal stations had touched the 40-degree mark.
The intensity and spread of rain and thundershowers normally increase in the month of May. Accordingly, on May 5 scattered places in the state had received some rainfall. On May 6, Skymet had written that pre-Monsoon activity will increase in Kerala from May 12 onwards. As predicted earlier, rain and thundershowers will gradually pick up pace over the region.

The wind discontinuity can be seen extending from Marathwada, across interiors of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This will continue to bring pre-Monsoon showers on either side of the discontinuity including Kerala. The weather models are also showing the presence of a cyclonic circulation, which is moving across southern parts of Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. With this system in close proximity and intense weather activity going on in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), pre-Monsoon showers will keep increasing in Kerala.
Rainfall activity in Kerala will enhance after 3 to 4 days. Generally, pre-Monsoon showers increase in Kerala before the arrival of Southwest Monsoon in India. After about a week, even heavy showers are likely throughout Kerala.
