Heavy Mumbai rains take a backseat

July 26, 2017 3:45 PM | Skymet Weather Team

After July 21, Mumbai rains have been witnessing a diminishing trend. It was before July 21 that Mumbai witnessed some heavy showers with one or two extremely heavy three-digit rains as well. These rains created a chaotic situation for the city and led to increased number of traffic snarls and water logging incidents.

Now, the intensity of rains have declined considerably and the temperatures remaining under 30°C from last many days have kept the weather conditions pleasant. Light traces of rains were observed by Mumbai in the last 24 hours as well. Within the span of 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Mumbai’s Santa Cruz Observatory recorded 9 mm of rains.

The reason for these rains as per Skymet Weather can be attributed to the low-pressure area over South Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat region. This weather system is pulling the moisture levels thereby resulting in reduced rainfall activity over the city of dreams. Due to this weather system, heavy rains have refrained themselves from showing up in Mumbai after July 22.

As per the present scenario, the offshore trough that is running along the West Coast has become inactive and there is no significant weather system prevailing over the region. Due to this, the Monsoon Surge has also weakened. In the wake of all these weather systems, rains with reduced intensity will keep on occurring over Mumbai for at least the next 3-4 days. But these rains will be of short duration. Temperature and humidity are expected to peak once again.

So far, Mumbai has been able to record 851.6 mm of rainfall against its monthly average of 799.7 mm in July.
