At present also, Mumbai is witnessing moderate to heavy rains over several places. Moreover, weather conditions remain favourable for the rainy spell to continue throughout the day.
Good Monsoon rains have made a comeback over the city and this spell is likely to stay for at least next 24 to 48 hours.
Increase in rain activity has also led to significant dip in the maximum temperatures, which has been hovering around 26°C since morning. Weathermen predict day maximum to settle around 27°C, which is well below normal by three degrees.
Updated on July 19, 2016 11:30 AM (IST): Heavy Mumbai rains return, more in offing
Heavy Monsoon rains had been evading Mumbai for quite a long time now. However, the wait has finally come to an end as the city has recorded heavy showers over several parts.
Santa Cruz Observatory had recorded 58.3 mm of rain in span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday. With this, the city has so far recorded 487 mm of rain in July, but still has a long way to go for achieving its daunting target of monthly average rainfall of 799.7 mm.
Colaba Observatory also witnessed similar weather activity, receiving 55.8 mm of rain.
Moreover, this rainy spell is here to stay. Skymet Weather predicts that moderate to heavy showers will continue over Mumbai for next 48 hours. Thereafter, intensity of rains will reduce but patchy showers will continue, with few places recording heavy rains as well.
Rains have finally picked up pace over the entertainment capital, which can be attributed to the off-shore trough running along the West Coast, from Maharashtra up to Kerala.
This trough has been lying feeble for the last few days but the fresh Monsoon surge has once again activated the trough, leading to increase in Monsoon rains. According to Skymet Weather, waxing and waning of the Monsoon rain is a regular feature that occurs from time to time.
Though, Mumbai has been recording on and off light rain with few moderate spells till now but the famous three digit rains have been missing. July is the rainiest month for the city, with number of rainy days also increasing significantly.
During this month, Mumbaikars witness rains of varying intensity for almost everyday with average number of rainy days amounting to 24.
