Heavy Mumbai Rains of 375 mm in 24 hours wreak havoc, highest in a decade

Mumbai Rains have been wreaking havoc over the city with very heavy rains bringing life to a standstill. Mumbai Rains were late, definitely very late, but when they did arrive, it was with a bang and lots of water logging throughout the city.

It has been incessantly raining for the past four days and last night, it looked like all hell broke loose. The city has been witnessing torrential downpour making it the rainiest night in July.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Santa Cruz observatory has recorded 375 mm of rains which happens to be the highest in a decade. Before this, the city saw 274.1 mm in 2009. The highest ever was in 2005 when the city recorded 944.2 mm rain in a span of 24 hours.

In the last four days of continuous rains, Mumbai has recorded a whopping 777 mm of rains which is a lot for the city to take.

In view of last night’s heavy rains and rainfall forecast for today, schools and colleges along with government offices have also been shut with many private companies asking their employees to work from home.

At least 13 people have lost their lives due to a wall collapse in Malad East. 1000 people have been shifted to safer areas with the aid of Naval Teams, NDRF, fire brigade, and local volunteers.

In fact, these Mumbai rains are expected to continue today as well with rainfall likely to see an increase during the afternoon hours.
