Updated on Sep 20, 2017: The city of dreams Mumbai has recorded extremely heavy rains in the past day. Santacruz Observatory recorded rain to the tune of 304 mm and Colaba Observatory 210 mm of rain. As per Skymet Weather, the rain intensity is likely to reduce over Mumbai and light to moderate showers will continue during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Mumbai rains are back with a bang again. As predicted by Skymet weather, heavy rains have commenced over many parts of Mumbai during the early afternoon hours today. These rains are expected to continue for at least another 2-3 hours before slowing down.
As per Skymet Weather, the thunderclouds which were till now over the Arabian sea have drifted over Mumbai and thus, heavy thundershowers followed by gusty winds are likely to continue in many parts of the city for the next 2-3 hours.
Thereafter, Mumbai rains will take a short break but as the cyclonic circulation is persisting over North Coastal Maharashtra, therefore, regeneration of thunderclouds is a possibility. On and off rains are likely to continue until tonight.
Few places in Mumbai may receive very heavy spells as well leading to traffic snarls and waterlogging issues. Though these rains are back with good news too, as this weather system will not persist for a longer duration, rains are likely to reduce by tomorrow morning.
Moreover, this can be the last heavy rainy spells this Monsoon season from the city of dreams. Henceforth, heavy spells are not foreseen for Mumbai.
Updated on September 19, 12:15 PM: Heavy Mumbai rains likely; waterlogging, traffic snarl threat looms large
From the last 3-4 days, the infamous Mumbai rains have been playing the game of hide and seek with its inhabitants. The last time, heavy Mumbai rains made their appearance was on September 14 when the Colaba Observatory recorded 37 mm of rains while on the same date, Santa Cruz Observatory witnessed good showers to the tune of 64 mm.
Since then, good rains in Mumbai have taken a back seat though on and off light showers have been keeping the city weather pleasant. In the last 24 hours also, patchy showers were recorded by the Colaba Observatory while the Santa Cruz Observatory failed to record any traces of rains.
However, now Skymet Weather predicts that Mumbai weather is all set to take a U-turn as heavy rains are on cards for the ‘city of dreams’.

As per Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is persisting over north-coastal Maharashtra and adjoining South Gujarat. Moreover, the offshore trough which is running from Konkan to Kerala along the West Coast has also become active.
In the wake of these two weather systems, heavy rains were observed over most parts of coastal Maharashtra, sparing Mumbai. However, now moderate to heavy rains are expected to lash the maximum city during the next 24 hours.
Thereafter, the intensity of rains will once again reduce and the weather will become almost dry with the possibility of isolated showers at some places only.

Moreover, these moderate to heavy showers may once again trigger threat of waterlogging and traffic snarls. However, as the above-mentioned cyclonic circulation is expected to fade away very soon. Therefore, we do not expect heavy rains to persist for a longer duration of more than 24 hours.
By September 21 evening, the weather of Mumbai will improve and rain intensity will also reduce but the partly cloudy sky will prevail.
