Updated on July 17, 2017 10:30 AM (IST): Heavy Mumbai rains continue; more showers expected

After a sluggish performance during first week of July, Mumbai rains have once again made a comeback with a bang.  Showers of varied intensity have been flashing the region for quite some time now.

In fact, during the last 48 to 72 hours the city has received a few heavy spells of rainfall. So much so that the last 24 hours were also not different and heavy showers made an appearance over most parts of Mumbai.

In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 a.m on Sunday, the Santa Cruz observatory in Mumbai recorded 57 mm of rain. Also, good rains were witnessed over Colaba and observed heavy showers to the tune of 64 mm.

These showers are attributed to two weather systems that are persisting over the region. One of them happens to be a cyclonic circulation which is currently over Gujarat and adjoining.  While the other system is the off shore trough along the West Coast which is running from South Gujarat to Kerala.

With this, moderate to heavy rains are expected to continue over Mumbai during the next 24 hours as well. The possibility of a few sharp showers also cannot be ruled out.

Weather conditions will remain pleasant and temperatures are expected to settle below the normal levels. So far, Mumbai has been able to record a good 417 mm of rain against its monthly average of 799.7 mm.

While reaching its monthly target seemed like a daunting task a few days ago, with more showers expected over the region in the next two weeks, Mumbai might just end up surpassing its monthly mean.
