Monsoon 2016: Moderate Mumbai rains to continue
Monsoon rains seemed to have taken a break over the maximum city. Before that the commercial capital of the country had been receiving light Monsoon rains. So much so that
Mumbai Rains made a comeback yesterday giving heavy rains over the region. With such heavy rains, Mumbai came to a standstill severely affecting road, rail and air transport. Several areas were waterlogged, people were stuck in traffic jams for hours.
During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Santa Cruz observatory in Mumbai received a whopping 141.7 mm. Colaba observatory recorded 31.6 mm of rainfall during the same period. The suburbs of Mumbai also witnessed some Monsoon rains.
Now, the next 24 hours in Mumbai are expected to not be as intense. In fact, the city is expected to receive light to moderate rains. However, the possibility of heavy showers over a few areas also cannot be ruled out.
Torrential rains of 126 mm in six hours cripple Mumbai
Mumbai rains have been wreaking havoc causing all the woes in one day. The city of dreams has transformed into the city of rains as heavy showers continued over the maximum city since morning until the afternoon hours.
Road, rail and air traffic was severely disrupted, schools were closed early and several areas remained waterlogged.
While heavy rains of 72 mm was recorded during the first three hours of the day between 8:30 and 11:30 am, another 54.6 mm of rainfall was observed over the maximum city. Thus, in a span of six hours, Mumbai has recorded a whopping 126.6 mm of rain.
So far, in less than a week, Mumbai has recorded a good 307 mm of rain against its monthly rainfall of 529.7 mm. Mumbai rains are expected to continue during the next 24 hours as well. Rainfall intensity will vary from moderate to heavy.
Mumbai rains get monstrous, maximum city limps
Just about a few hours ago, Mumbai rains seemed to be stuttering. However, tides have turned and rains have picked up pace and have turned monstrous. In a span of three hours between 8:30 am and 11:30 am, the city has received a whopping 72 mm of rainfall.
Local train services have also suffered a setback as rail tracks have become waterlogged. In fact, Sion station is completely flooded. Schools and some offices have also declared early closure keeping in view the prevailing situation.
As per Skymet Weather, during the next 24 hours, the maximum city is expected to receive more rains. Rainfall intensity will vary from heavy to very heavy. Suburbs will also receive heavy Monsoon rains during this period.
Heavy Mumbai rains are back, waterlogging, traffic woes begin
Mumbaikars have been craving for good rains for quite some time now. Good Monsoon rains were missing from the maximum city. However, rain gods have once again turned towards Mumbai and heavy rainfall saga has begun over the city.
While rains were missed and the residents couldn’t have asked for more, traffic and waterlogging woes are only added elements. Currently both Mumbai and its suburbs have been witnessing heavy rains and Twitter is flooded with annoyed commuters.
As per locals, traffic route between Borivali and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) is jam packed and people who left their homes at 9 are still stuck in the middle of nowhere. Many parts of BKC have also been waterlogged and for those who are unaware, the area has offices of some of the leading banks and insurance companies.
Commuters are also stuck at Bandra which happens to be waterlogged and people have bene complaining of being stuck at Lilavati for quite some time now. People going towards Powai must also think twice as the entire area seems to be reeling under heavy traffic.
Many areas in Parel are also waterlogged. Make sure you delay your shopping spree at Hindmata unless you would like to swim in knee deep waters.
The local trains’ situation is just as bad. There is waterlogging between Dadar and Kurla station. Other stations are also waterlogged and the situation is expected to worsen as heavy rains have decided not to take a break.
As per media reports, more than 30 routes of BEST buses have been diverted due to masisve traffic jams along with waterlogging. Andheri subway seems to be flooded and is closed right now.
A high tide warning of 4.05 metres at about 1:35 PM has also been issued. Due to haze, the Bandra Worli sea link is hardly visible.
Several flights have also been delayed in Mumbai. As per passengers tweeting from their aircrafts, some of the flights are still on the runway and haven’t taken off yet.
As per Skymet Weather, during the next 24 hours, Mumbai is expected to receive more rains which is why residents have been advised to remain safe and at home.
