The axis of the Monsoon trough is now passing through Ganganagar, Delhi, Kanpur, Daltonganj, Keonjhargarh, Paradip and thence southeastwards to central Bay of Bengal. It is lying quite close to the foothills of Bihar. Moreover, a cyclonic circulation is lying over northeastern parts of Bihar and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal.
These weather systems will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over eastern parts of Bihar. Places like Purnea, Supaul, Sitamarhi and Kishanganj will be the worst affected.
In fact, Bihar has already started receiving good showers. During last 24 hours, Chapra received 91 mm of rainfall.
Moderate to heavy rains will continue till July 25 over north and northeastern parts of Bihar. Light to moderate showers are likely in rest of Bihar. Thereafter, weather will improve significantly. Intensity of rainfall will decrease and only scattered light rains will continue over the region.
Bihar at present is rainfall deficit to the tune of 3%. This spell of rainfall will definitely help Bihar to achieve its Monsoon rainfall target.
During the last few days, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has occurred over the Nepal hills. Whenever it rains very heavily in Nepal, the flood waters flow down the slopes to reach the foothills of Bihar. A similar situation cannot be ruled out for now.
