Heavy Monsoon rains have once again headed towards northern hilly state of Uttarakhand. Fairly widespread torrential rains in Uttarakhand have triggered series of landslides in the state.
The latest incident of landslide has led to the closure of arterial Highway 87 that connects Rampur to Nainital. Not only this, we do not expect any relief during the next couple of days as rain fury is likely to continue over the state.
According to Skymet Weather, these heavy rains can be attributed to several Monsoon systems over and around the region.
The axis of Monsoon trough has moved north and is presently running across the foothills of Himalayas. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also seen over West Uttar Pradesh.
Both the systems have led to widespread heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across the state. In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Tuesday, Nainital has recorded 88 mm of rainfall, followed by Pithoragarh 73 mm, Panthnagar 48 mm, Mukteshwar 46 mm, and Almora 39 mm.
As per weathermen, whenever the axis of Monsoon trough runs across the foothills of Himalayas, it often leads to incessant rainfall over Uttarakhand. With this, the situation remains grim as with more rains in offing, more incidences of flash floods, cloud burst and landslides loom large.
