Heavy Monsoon rains to continue over Northeast India

June 18, 2016 12:01 PM | Skymet Weather Team

Southwest Monsoon continues to remain active over the lower Assam region, Nagaland and some parts of Meghalaya. In fact, moderate to heavy Monsoon rains have been recorded over some parts of the above mentioned states. On the other hand, normal Monsoon conditions have been witnessed over other parts of Northeast India.

For instance, during the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday, Guwahati recorded a whopping 114.5 mm of rain, followed by Dimapur where 92 mm of rainfall has been received. Other areas to have received good showers include Golaghat 90.2 mm, Mazbat 49.2 mm, Lengpui 47.8 mm, and Cherrapunji 47.3 mm.

These rains can be attributed to the humid southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal which have been increasing the moisture incursion over the region. Also, Southwest Monsoon has now also covered entire West Bengal, Sikkim, parts of Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha.

Now, during the next 24 to 48 hours, moderate to heavy rains will continue over many parts of Northeast India particularly the Assam region and its adjoining areas. Thereafter, rainfall intensity will reduce marginally. However, light to moderate rainfall will continue to lash the Northeastern states until June 23. During this period, temperatures will also be in the comfortable range.
