Southwest Monsoon has been vigorous over Maharashtra, leading to heavy to very heavy rains over the several cities.

In fact, Nagpur was the rainiest city of Maharashtra on Tuesday, with city recording three-digit rainfall to the tune of 113 mm of rain. With this, the city has also surpassed its monthly average rainfall.

This was followed by Harnai at 72 mm, Alibag 65 mm, Mumbai 63 mm, Dahanu 57 mm, Ratnagiri 35 mm and Chandrapur 30 mm.

According to Skymet Weather, these rains can be attributed to the cyclonic circulation prevailing over South Gujarat. The off-shore trough also continues to extend from this system along the West Coast up to Kerala. With this, rains have picked up pace across Maharashtra, leading to good rains across the state.

Meanwhile, Pune settled with light rains to the tune of 4 mm only. Being a rain shadow area, the city does not record much rainfall during the Monsoon season, until and unless any system approaches from east direction or any trough forms over Madhya Maharashtra.

Further, during the next 24 hours, we expect moderate to heavy rains will continue over the coastal parts of the state including Mumbai during the next 2-3 days.

Good showers are also likely to continue over Vidarbha region including Nagpur, Akola and Chandrapur.

However, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada will continue with light showers only, on account of prevailing Monsoon surge over the area.
