Heavy Monsoon rains lash Varanasi

June 29, 2015 1:50 PM |

Heavy Monsoon rains lash VaranasiAfter a brief period of dry spell in the holy city of Varanasi, heavy rain was recorded on Sunday. In a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday, Varanasi observed more than 100 mm of rain, which is the second highest all-time 24 hour rainfall record for the month of June. In the year 2008, Varanasi had observed 130.8 mm of rain which is the record rainfall for June.

This spell of heavy rain also led to the cancellation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Varanasi. Heavy showers began on Sunday morning, and by 11:30 am, the rainfall figures had already reached 38 mm.

This rainfall activity was a result of a low pressure area which has developed over East Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar and Jharkhand. This rainy spell in Varanasi will continue till Monday, thereafter partly cloudy sky will be observed over the city. From Tuesday, the temperatures in the city will again start rising and settle in the mid 30s.

Furthermore, this rain belt will gradually shift towards Central Uttar Pradesh as the low pressure area is also moving in that direction. This system will gradually weaken and finally move in the west direction merging with the Monsoon trough.

No major rainfall activity is in the offing for at least 4 to 5 days. However, occasional patchy rain in the city will be observed during this period. Around July 5 and 6, another rainy spell will lash the city. Till then the weather will remain warm and humid.

The approaching rainy spell in the next week will continue for 2 to 3 days resulting in pleasant weather conditions. Varanasi lies in eastern Uttar Pradesh where agriculture largely depends on Monsoon rains. Therefore, the approaching spell of rainfall will be eagerly awaited by the people of the region.
