Updated on July 28, 2019, 11:31 AM: Moderate rains to continue in Pune for next 2 to 3 days
Moderate to heavy rains to the tune of 32 mm have lashed the Pune city in the last 24 hours. The reason for these showers can be attributed to the strong Monsoon surge prevailing along the West Coast. Moreover, moderate rains and thundershower activities are expected to continue for the next two to three days.
In the wake of these activities, the day temperatures will settle around 25 to 26 degree Celsius, while night temperatures will remain close to 21 to 22 degree Celsius. However, the humidity levels would remain high due to the presence of enough moisture in the atmosphere. These conditions would be accompanied with a moderate breeze.
Updated on July 27 2019, 9:35 AM: Heavy Monsoon rains to the tune of 72 mm lash Pune, more intense spells likely
During the last 24 hours, heavy rains and thundershower activities occurred over many parts of Pune. Pune has received 72 mm of rains until 5:30 today. This was one of the heaviest downpours in the city during recent times. These rain activities were due to an active Monsoon surge over West coast of Maharashtra.
At present, a Trough is extending from South Gujarat to Coastal Karnataka and a Cyclonic Circulation is also persisting over South Gujarat which has enhanced the rain activities and the Monsoon Surge. Mumbai and adjoining areas recorded heavy to very rains. A spillover of these rains was seen over interior parts of Maharashtra as well in areas such as that of Madhya Maharashtra, the reason why Pune also saw heavy rainfall activity during the last 24 hours.
Now we expect these good rains to continue today as well. Although the intensity may decrease tomorrow but again the rains will enhance and may continue until July 29 over Pune and adjoining areas of Madhya Maharashtra. We expect heavy rains on July 29 as well.
After July 29, we expect the rains to start subsiding but on and off light showers will continue over the city. So, we can say that another 24 to 48 hours are crucial in terms of rain activities for Pune. Moderate to heavy rains will continue with short breaks in between.
Not only Pune but may areas of Madhya Maharashtra including Nashik, Ahmednagar, Sangli, Satara will also receive good rains until July 29.
Waterlogging in low lying areas and traffic disruption will be common. However, as a relief as these rains are falling on the weekend, most offices and colleges will be closed. Thus, people might be able to escape the fury of these spells.
Yet again, the rain intensity might increase over the city on Monday. Thus, residents have to keep prepared for such a spell. Weather will then start clearing by Tuesday. Although on and off light rains might continue but it will not disrupt the day to day life.
Before this, Pune had observed heavy spells of rains on June 28 and 29, after which weather was mainly dry with on and off occasional rains. This is the first heavy spell of July.
