Kolkata has been receiving good rains throughout September so far. There were some occasions in the month where the city received extremely heavy rainfall. The reason for these rains can be attributed to the low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal.
Initially this weather system formed as a cyclonic circulation over North Bay of Bengal and gradually it has induced into a low pressure area which is still persisting over the region.
Now we expect heavy rains to continue over Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata for next 24-48 hours. Since the beginning of September till date, Alipore observatory in the city has received 187 mm of rain.
Heavy rains in the latter half of Monsoon occurs over Kolkata due to the formation of strong weather systems such as Depression or Cyclone over Central Bay of Bengal during the month of September. As the Cyclone tends to re-curve towards Odisha and West Bengal, good rainfall is seen over the region.
The weather system is likely to persist near West Bengal owing to which several parts of West Bengal will continue to receive good Monsoon rain during next 24-48 hours. West Bengal is currently at a rain surplus of 10%. With good rains in sight, this figure is expected to improve further.
