Heavy Monsoon rains ahead for rain deficient Northeast India

August 20, 2016 12:24 PM |

Heavy Monsoon rains ahead for rain deficient Northeast IndiaNortheast India receives good Monsoon rains during the Southwest Monsoon season. So much so that the region happens to be one of the rainiest pockets of the country as constant downpours continue over the region.

For the past few days, the region has been receiving on and off Monsoon rains. However, heavy showers have been absent from Northeast India for quite some time now. Due to this, Northeast India has been witnessing a rainfall deficiency.

In fact, all the areas in the Northeastern pocket remain rain deficient as of now. While Assam and Meghalaya are witnessing a rainfall deficiency of 33 percent, NMMT is deficient to the tune of 25 percent. Arunachal Pradesh which is also 11 percent rain deficient falls under the normal rains category as of now.

However, a fresh Monsoon system has developed in Northeast Bay of Bengal in the form of a cyclonic circulation. This weather system is expected to give moderate to heavy rains over many parts of Northeast India. The NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura) region in particular will receive some heavy spells of rain during the next 24 to 48 hours.

Other areas including Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh will also receive good Monsoon rains during this period. Thereafter, rain intensity will decrease as the weather system will move towards Gangetic West Bengal. However, light Monsoon rains will continue over Northeast India.
