Heavy Monsoon rain saga continues over Odisha

August 2, 2016 7:33 AM |

Heavy Monsoon rain saga continues over OdishaThe state of Odisha has been witnessing good Monsoon rains for quite some time now. So much so that many areas have been receiving rains more than 50 mm. Rainfall intensity has been much more over the coastal areas as compared to the interior parts.

During the last 21 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Puri recorded a whopping 68 mm of rain followed by Chandbali where 45 mm of rainfall was recorded. Other areas to have received rain include Balasore 17 mm and Bhubaneswar 14 mm.

These good Monsoon rains can be attributed to the low pressure area which is currently over North Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas. The system is showing signs of further intensification and may even become a well-marked low pressure area during the next 48 hours.

Thus, Odisha is expected to receive more Monsoon rains during the next 24 to 48 hours. Some areas may even receive heavy rainfall during this period. Coastal areas are likely to receive more rains during this period.

On August 1, the state of Odisha received 14.2 mm of rain against its daily average of 11.2 mm, which happens to be 27 percent in excess. However, as far as the rainfall deficiency is concerned, the state is at present 19 percent rain deficient falling under the normal rains category. More rains may help in reducing the deficient figures of the state in the coming days.
