The Southwest Monsoon has covered the entire country, but the Monsoon trough which gets established and runs from Ganganagar to headway has changed its normal position due to the low pressure area moving from Uttarakhand to East Uttar Pradesh.
Moreover, the passage of the Western Disturbance has pulled the western end of the Monsoon trough upward, forcing it to run along the foothills. This position of the trough is very conducive for giving rain over the hills, particularly over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The foothills also receive good amounts of rain due to the system.
For instance, Dehradun which lies in the foothills of Uttarakhand received heavy rain of 72 mm in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Sunday. The middle and upper regions of the state also received fairly widespread moderate rain with Tehri and Uttarkashi recording 14 mm and 13 mm of rainfall, respectively.
For the last few days Uttarakhand has been receiving some good amounts of rain, which has helped the state to record surplus rain. On June 25, the hill state recorded 27.9 mm of rain against the normal of 9 mm. The rainfall amounts were far better on June 26 as 74.4 mm of rain was observed against the normal of 8.7 mm.
Thereafter, moderate amounts of rain still continue in the state. Currently rainfall amount in the state is surplus by 17%. Earlier the state was observing a rainfall deficiency of 47%.
Meanwhile, weather models at Skymet show that light to moderate rain will continue in the state for another 3-4 days, which could push the rainfall figures higher.
