Extremely heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has thrown life out of gear in some parts of the state. In Nainital, incessant heavy rain has brought a big chunk of a mountain onto the road. Water and mud has flooded roads, shops, and even houses.
In 48 hours, from 8.30 am on Sunday, Nainital recorded 158 mm rainfall. Heavy to moderate rains have been going on all over Uttarakhand with several districts recording good amounts of rain. But Nainital has been affected badly with mudslides and water inundation making life difficult for locals as well as tourists.
Other parts of the state have also been affected due to heavy rains. Schools have been closed in Almora, Pithoragarh has been on high alert for a few days now, and two landslides have been reported in Chirchina. As per reports, rain alert has been sounded in Uttarakhand.
Landslides and water inundation triggered by heavy rainfall is a recurring challenge faced by local authorities in hilly areas. Authorities in Nainital have sprung into action and several machines are being used to clean roads and lanes. As many as 16 machines are working to clear debris, but with more of it rolling down onto the roads, completion of work is taking more time.
Conditions remain good for more heavy rainfall in the region in coming days. The intensity of rain is likely to reduce over the next 24 hours though. Heavy rainfall is likely to reduce and become moderate for some time. But thereafter, intensity of rain is expected to increase again.
Tourism in Nainital has also been hit badly. The city records a footfall in millions, especially during this time of the year. Movement of tourists has been paralyzed as major hangout points are not fit for a visit. Popular tourist attractions in the region also remain inaccessible for several visitors who have converged towards the region in an attempt to experience and explore the hills. Moreover, ongoing pilgrimages have also been affected due to heavy rains in the state.
