Heavy Monsoon rain continues over Karnataka

The heavy downpour over north interior Karnataka will continue as the low pressure system continues to persist over the region. For the last 48 hours, heavy rains were witnessed in various districts.

Yesterday the region recorded 18.7 mm of rain on an average against the normal of 3.8 mm. This makes the rainfall surplus percentage shoot up to 392% for a day and that is a lot given the geography of the region.

Due to the heavy downpour yesterday, the rain deficiency of the region has further decreased to 1% below normal.

In last 24 hours fairly widespread rain has occurred over the region and it is expected to continue today as well. And due to the continuous downpour which will continue today, we expect the rain deficiency will improve.

Since last few Monsoon seasons, over north interior Karnataka along with neighbouring Marathwada, rain has remained deficient. Due to geographical location of this area, the weather systems originating in either Arabian Sea or Bay of Bengal hardly manage to reach the region and dissipate before giving any good rains.

Therefore, the region remains rain deficient even during the Monsoon. But this year we are seeing this shift in the rainfall figures all thanks to the strong low-pressure system over Andhra Pradesh.
